What Is Ear Surgery?

Protruding or abnormally shaped ears may not affect your ability to hear, but they can certainly be a factor in low self-esteem or self-confidence issues. Ear surgery improves the shape, size, or position of your ears, enhancing your appearance. If you're unhappy with the way your ears look, your Norfolk, VA, plastic surgeon, Dr. Guy Trengove-Jones, can help you decide if the surgery is right for you.

Who can benefit from ear surgery?

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a good idea if your ears stick out, are too large, or don't fit your face. The surgery can also correct birth defects or repair injuries. The ears must reach their adult size before the procedure can be performed. In most cases, that occurs when a child is about 5 years old.

Although ear surgery is often performed in children, it's just as effective for adults. If you've always felt self-conscious about your ears, surgery can help you feel better about your appearance.

What happens during ear surgery?

Ear surgery is an outpatient procedure that doesn't require an overnight hospital stay. Before the procedure begins, you'll receive a sedative and a local anesthetic to ensure that you don't feel any pain during the surgery. Your plastic surgeon may remove skin and cartilage when reshaping your ear. If your protruding ears will be pinned, your surgeon will use permanent sutures to attach the cartilage to your head.

Incisions are made at the back of the ear or in-ear creases to make scarring less noticeable.

What is ear surgery recovery like?

Your ears will be bandaged before you leave the Norfolk outpatient surgery facility. After your bandages are removed, your surgeon may give you a recovery headband to wear over your ears. You will probably only need to use prescription pain medication for a few days after surgery. In about a week after the procedure, stitches may be removed.

It's important to keep your head elevated and use several pillows when you sleep to reduce swelling. In about two weeks, swelling will have gone done enough to see the results of your surgery.
